Quick Tips to Lower Your Water Bill

It’s that new year, new me time again. A time where we plan to do better, make some important changes and try new things. It’s a time where we set goals and are full of motivation. And then February hits and the enthusiasm is usually gone.

But this year you won’t lose that pep in your step if saving money is on your list of to do’s. Discover these easy and affordable ways to lower your water bill, and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Use Greywater to Water Your Plants
Greywater is gently used, excess water in your home. It typically comes from the sink, bathtub, or washing machine. Greywater is excellent for watering household plants, indoor or outdoor, and also for flushing toilets. To catch Greywater:
  • Scoop out the water after a bath and save it
  • Wash your veggies and fruits in a bowl in the sink and keep the leftover water
  • Place a bucket under the tap when running water for a shower
  • Place a bucket under the hose in near your washing machine to catch the water during the rinsing cycle.
Keep the greywater in containers to water plants, and one in the bathroom for flushing toilets. Pour some water into the bowl, and the toilet will flush naturally without using freshwater.

Take Your Car to a Carwash
Skip the sponge and bucket, hop in the car and take a drive around Rogers, AR. Find the nearest car wash and let the savings begin. Home car washes use up to 120 gallons of water per car, which is equivalent to taking six showers. Could you justify taking six showers in a day? Probably not. Better to save that water usage for something else, and head to the nearest car wash, which typically only uses 20 gallons of water per wash. Most car washes also have a water reclamation system that recycles the water they use. Fast, efficient and eco-friendly.

Check Your Home for Leaks
Having a leak is one of the last things we want happening in our home. It’s messy, expensive, and a real pain. Stopping leaks before they get out of hand, however, is easier than you think! Checking for running toilets, and surface water around your faucets and pipes are easy ways to spot leaks as they begin. A faucet dripping once every 2 seconds can waste up to 1,000 gallons of water in a year. Make sure you keep an eye out for cracked pipes or dripping faucets, and always make sure the flapper that controls water coming in and out is sealed.

These quick checks can save you thousands of gallons of water on your bill per year, which gives you back some money. However, if you find any flaws, calling a plumber is the easiest way to save as well, instead of having to constantly pay overpriced bills.

Shower Instead of Taking Baths
Showers aren’t just a faster and more efficient way to bathe. Taking a ten-minute shower over a bath with save you 16 gallons of water each wash. It takes approximately 36 gallons of water to take a bath, and only 20 gallons of water to shower. At the end of the day, a little goes a long way.

From turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, to washing your dishes in a dishwasher rather than by hand, there are many ways to save on your water bill. Take control of your savings and make this year one to remember!
