Why Get A Plumbing Permit? Discover The Easy Steps & Tricks

Town & Country Plumbing

Do you need a plumbing permit? Find out more below.

The plumbing in your home is something that you want to make sure is durable, reliable, and works without incident or worry. That’s why it’s no surprise that if something goes wrong, you want it fixed right the first time, or if it’s time to renovate or upgrade, you want to ensure quality results.

For most people, this means that getting any plumbing work means getting a trusted professional, like an experienced Rogers plumber. But it may also mean that you’ll require some legal documentation to make sure that everything is done properly, like a plumbing permit. But what is it, and why do you need it?

What’s A Plumbing Permit?
A plumbing permit, as you may have already guessed from the name alone, is the official document that the city of Rogers issues to you, giving you permission to get your plumbing work started. This permit is provided once you have filled out an application stating your desire to have the work done, and what the nature of the work will be.

For homeowners, this provides a lot of protection and peace of mind. First, with a proper plumbing permit, this means that the work done has been recognized by the city, is entered into the city records, and is compliant with building codes. That means there’s no issue with your plumbing work being covered by your home insurance. If you attempt to get work done without a permit, not only may it cause insurance problems, it may even place a home sale in jeopardy if a home inspector realizes that renovated bathroom isn’t in city records and you’re trying to sell a home with illegal additions made to it.

When Do You Need One?
A plumbing permit is legally required, but it is not always required. If the type of plumbing work you need done is more of a repair, such as patching up a leaky water pipe or just sending a plumbing snake down the drain to clear out some blockage after the kids poured something down the sink, there’s no need for a permit.

If you’re doing something major, however, that will fundamentally add or alter to your existing plumbing infrastructure, this is when a plumbing permit becomes a legal requirement. So if you’re finally adding that bathroom to the first floor, or you’re renovating your kitchen, with more sinks, or even relocating the way your drainage system works, your Rogers plumber will need a plumbing permit before work can begin.

Apply & Pay
Getting a plumbing permit isn’t free, there will be certain administrative fees involved, but it’s not an especially expensive process. The plumbing permit fee is broken up into two parts. The first is the standard “flat” fee that everyone pays at a minimum, which is $20.

After that, additional fees are added onto this base depending on the nature of the job. Most of them are in the $2 range for things like adding a water closet or adding a dishwasher. Fees change if the work is being done for commercial buildings.

Don’t take chances with your Rogers, AR plumbing work. Get quality results with a trusted, experienced Rogers’s plumber, and get legal protection with the proper documentation like the plumbers permit.
